Sunday Awe
Doubt is often seen as the enemy of faith, but what if it is actually part of its strength? Genuine faith does not fear questions. It welcomes them, knowing that questions stretch our mind and deepen our understanding. The opposite of faith is not doubt—it is certainty, belief without reflection.
The Psalms are filled with honest questions: “Why, O Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1). Even Jesus cried out from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). These are not the cries of unbelief, but of authentic relationship—an engagement with God that is raw and alive.
When we ask questions, we admit we do not have all the answers. That humility opens space for wisdom to emerge. The apostle Paul wrote, “Now we see through a glass, darkly.” ( 1 Corinthians 13:12). To live in faith is to live in uncertainty and trust the Light even when we cannot see clearly. Questions enlarge us by opening us up to possibilities, whereas answers limit us to our knowledge. Doubt, in this sense, is not a threat but a teacher. It keeps us honest. It keeps us growing.
Throughout history, mystics and saints have walked the path of “unknowing.” Thomas Aquinas called all his great theology “straw” compared to the mystery of God. Mother Teresa admitted to decades of spiritual dryness yet continued to love. Real faith is that which lives side by side with silence, ambiguity, or pain.
Faith and doubt are not opposites; they are dance partners. Faith leads us to the edge of mystery, and doubt invites us to lean in rather than turn away. Together they move us toward a deeper trust—not in our understanding, but in the One who understands us completely.
Take a moment to be in AWE:
Aware – Notice your questions. What are you struggling to believe or understand right now?
Wonder – Instead of resisting the doubt, ask what it might be trying to show you.
Experience – Rest in the mystery. Let trust arise—not from answers, but from presence.
In the end, faith is not the absence of doubt—it is the courage to keep walking even when the path disappears into the fog.
