The Cosmic Christ: God’s Embodying Presence

Sunday Awe

At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus—born in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes, adored by shepherds and angels. However, the Incarnation is far more than a moment in history; it is a cosmic mystery that reveals the eternal purpose of creation itself: that God might dwell in all things, and all things in God. This mystery is the hidden thread woven throughout Scripture.

“Christ” is not simply the title given to Jesus. Christ is the presence of God in all creation—the divine Logos, the eternal Word—through whom “all things were made” (John 1:3), and in whom “all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). As Paul declares, “Christ is all, and is in all.” (Colossians 3:11)

St. Maximus the Confessor understood this deeply: “The Logos of God, who is God, wills that the mystery of his Incarnation be actualized always and in all things.” (Ambigua 7, PG 91:1076C)

The Incarnation, then, is not a one-time miracle but the ongoing manifestation of God in the material world. Christ is continually being born—in every act of love, every stirring of compassion and every awakening of truth.

Christmas, then, invites us to a deeper, cosmic understanding: not only to honor Jesus’ birth but to awaken to the Christ who sustains all things, who shines through all people, and who fills all of creation. In quiet snowfall and distant galaxies, in the eyes of a stranger and the embrace of a loved one, in our suffering and in our joy—Christ is here.
