Sunday Awe
Sunday Awe
We were never meant to journey alone. From the very beginning, the Divine intention has been relationship—God with us, and we with one another. As it is written, “It is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). Shared spirituality transcends merely attending a service; it embodies belonging to a community that fosters acceptance without judgment, a sacred bond forged in honesty and nourished by presence.
This type of community is not easy to find and can often feel elusive. Yet, when discovered, it is profoundly rewarding. Jesus reminds us, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them” (Matthew 18:20). This is not merely a comment on numbers; it reveals a profound truth about divine presence. God dwells not only within us but also in the space between us and in the shared experiences we embrace.
Community is where faith takes flesh. Alone, we may catch glimpses of God in silence or solitude. But together, a dynamic unfolds. With our diverse array of gifts, perspectives, and experiences, we reflect the fullness of God. We are drawn beyond ourselves, learning to listen deeply, forgive freely, celebrate joyously, and give generously. In this collective journey, we come to understand that God is not just within me or you, but in us. The wise teacher declared, “The kingdom of God is in your midst” (Luke 17:21).
Community thrives not on sameness, but on our differences unified by a shared purpose. It is the diversity within a “common unity” that makes community dynamic, exciting, and fulfilling. Like different threads being knit together by One Spirit, we overcome opposition, and this unity becomes a living testament to divine love.
Shared spirituality fortifies our souls because we belong to something greater than ourselves. In a world often fractured by isolation and division, community provides healing. To be seen, known, and accepted—even in our weaknesses—is grace. Walking together through joys and struggles offers invaluable support.
If God is love, then community is where that love becomes visible. When we choose to gather—not just socially, but spiritually—we open ourselves to transformation. We become more attuned to God, more tender with one another, and more resilient in our faith journey. In the compassion we extend, in the burdens we share, and in the prayers we offer together, the Divine becomes tangible.
If you are not part of a community, seek one out. It may be found in a church, synagogue, or other religious setting.Or you may find it in a close-knit group of friends, among coworkers, or within a book club. What matters is that you find a group with open hearts, attentive ears, and willing hands. In doing so, you will discover that God is already there—dwelling in the midst of your shared life.
