The Power of Hope: Finding Light in Darkness

Sunday Awe

Sunday Awe

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18). Vision provides direction, a reason for living, and hope for the future. It is hope that strengthens us to persevere, even when the road is rough. Without hope, despair can take hold—and if left unchecked, despair can lead to a form of death. This may not always be physical, but emotional and spiritual death can be equally devastating.

At some point, we all find ourselves in a dark place. This darkness may arise from the loss of a loved one, the collapse of a dream, the unraveling of a marriage, or the blow of a life-altering diagnosis. We look around, and nothing resembles the life we envisioned. The darkness can be overwhelming, suffocating, and inescapable.

I faced such a time in 1987 and 1988. Life had been full of promise—my wife and I had just built our dream home, bought a financial planning and investment business, and welcomed our second child into the world. We had taken on $250,000 of debt, a large sum at the time, trusting that with hard work, we could manage it. Then the stock market crashed.

Almost overnight, our income plummeted by 50%, while our expenses—especially related to the business and mortgages—remained high. I spiraled into depression, feeling helpless, trapped, and utterly defeated. It was if I were in a tunnel and the light at the end was a train barreling towards me. I vividly remember the moment I hit rock bottom—borrowing on a credit card just to meet payroll. One night, I lay on my bed, consumed by despair, even contemplating suicide. But I couldn’t do that to my children. I couldn’t abandon them. Still, I saw no way out; I had lost hope.

Then something extraordinary happened. My parents, recognizing my struggle, came to visit. They didn’t offer advice or criticism; instead, they extended a lifeline: a no-strings-attached loan of $50,000. Given our situation, it was a risky offer. But it wasn’t merely the money that made a difference—it was the belief behind it. They believed in me. They believed we could navigate through it.

That gift lit a spark inside me. Externally, nothing changed immediately. But internally, everything did. I could see a path forward—not all the way to the end, but enough to take the next step. And that’s all hope needs—a crack in the darkness, a glimpse of light. The depression lifted. I got up. I kept going. In time, we overcame the hardship.

This experience taught me the extraordinary power of hope. It is the driving force of the human spirit. It gives us strength, not because the road ahead is easy, but because we believe that something better is possible. Hope does not deny the darkness; it dares to believe in the light.

Everywhere around us are stories of people who were broken, weary, and lost—until someone spoke a kind word, offered a helping hand, or simply stood beside them in the dark. In that moment, something shifted. A spark ignited. They found the courage to try again, and their life rebounded. That is the miracle of hope.

If you find yourself in that dark place, let this be your light: your story is not over. There is a way through, even if you can’t yet see it. Reach out to a friend. Seek out the Light. Even the smallest spark of hope can begin to change everything.

And if someone you know is struggling, be that spark. Speak words of encouragement. Offer support. Let your belief in them become the hope they need to carry on. You never know what kind of resurrection your love might ignite in another.
